Hotel Uzbekistan

Soviet brutalist landmark on Amir Timur Square

The most photogenic Soviet building in Tashkent — a curved seventeen-storey slab with a façade of repeating concrete arches, finished in 1974 and unchanged in essential character since. It still operates as a hotel, somewhat refurbished but determinedly Soviet in atmosphere.

Even if you don't stay, stop in for a drink at the ground-floor bar to experience the lobby — marble, chandeliers, and a faint smell of cigarettes that nothing seems to remove. The building looks particularly striking lit up at night.

A story
When it opened in 1974 the Hotel Uzbekistan was the showcase Intourist hotel of Central Asia — every visiting foreigner was channelled here, every room bugged, every floor watched by a dezhurnaya. The brutalist concrete-screen façade was meant to evoke a giant suzani embroidery.
