Place Royale

neoclassical square crowning the upper town, ringed by museums and a royal church

The Place Royale (Koningsplein) is the formal heart of the upper town — a perfectly symmetrical neoclassical square laid out in the 1770s on the site of the old Coudenberg palace, whose foundations survive underground. The white church of Saint-Jacques-sur-Coudenberg closes one side, an equestrian statue of the crusader Godfrey of Bouillon stands at its centre, and the great museums open off its edges. The view down toward the lower city is one of the best in Brussels.
