New Town

UNESCO-listed Georgian grid of terraces, crescents and squares

The other half of Edinburgh's UNESCO listing — and arguably the more remarkable. A planned 18th-century grid of Georgian terraces, crescents and squares laid out by the young James Craig in 1767 as an Enlightenment-era escape from the squalor of the Old Town. Princes Street faces the castle across the gardens; behind it, George Street, Charlotte Square and the elegant residential streets of the second New Town form one of the most complete pieces of Georgian urbanism anywhere in Europe.
