Morningside Road is the main street of one of Edinburgh's most established residential neighbourhoods, and it has the kind of independent commercial street that many neighbourhoods have lost. There are proper butchers, a fishmonger, bakers, delis, independent cafes, and book and antique shops. The character is solidly bourgeois — Morningside has been Edinburgh's professional middle-class heartland for over a century — but the shops are genuinely good rather than merely expensive. Worth walking its length for the contrast with the tourist-facing commercial streets of the Old Town.
