Edinburgh Zoo spreads across the slopes of Corstorphine Hill west of the city centre. Its best-known residents include penguins, chimpanzees on the Budongo Trail, tropical birds, and the UK's only koalas.
The hillside setting gives some parts of the zoo fine views, though it also means a few steep paths. It is a major family attraction, and checking for online tickets and temporary animal-area closures before visiting is sensible.
