The Palace of Holyroodhouse sits at the foot of the Royal Mile, facing Edinburgh Castle from the other end of the spine. It is the official residence of the King in Scotland, and the state rooms are closed during royal visits. The rest of the year, the palace is open for tours that cover the historic apartments, the ruined abbey of Holyrood, and the Queen's Gallery which houses exhibitions from the Royal Collection.
The Historic Apartments include Mary Queen of Scots' rooms — among the most atmospheric royal chambers in Britain, with original painted ceilings, tapestries and the bedchamber connected to the supper room where Rizzio was killed. The modern wing designed by Enric Miralles (the Scottish Parliament building is next door) contains the Queen's Gallery. The audio guide is excellent. Plan at least two hours for the palace and another hour for the abbey ruins and garden.
