Cathedral of the Madeleine

The Cathedral of the Madeleine on East South Temple is Salt Lake City's Catholic cathedral, a Gothic Revival building completed in 1909. Built from local Utah stone, the exterior features twin towers and elaborate carved stonework; the interior is one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical decoration in the American West, with a restored baldachin over the altar and exceptional stained glass windows.

Free guided tours are available and well worth taking — the interior art and the history of the Catholic community in a city dominated by a very different religious tradition make for an interesting contrast. The cathedral hosts regular organ concerts and choral performances open to the public.
