Rio Grande Depot / Utah State History

Address 300 South Rio Grande Street (450 West)

The Rio Grande Depot, opened in 1910 as the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad's western Utah terminal, is a grand Renaissance Revival station of pale stone, vaulted ceilings, and high-arched windows. The original Pullman ticket counter and the wood-paneled waiting room are intact. It is one of the city's most photogenic interiors and a National Historic Landmark.

The building now houses the Utah State History collection — free exhibits on Utah's archaeology, mining history, Native American cultures, and historic photography. The collection is more focused than the much larger Pioneer Memorial Museum and useful for visitors interested in the state's non-Mormon history. Open weekdays only; closed Saturdays and Sundays.
