Emigration Canyon, just east of the University of Utah, is the route by which the original Mormon pioneer party entered the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. The narrow paved road climbs from Hogle Zoo up over Little Mountain summit, then descends into Parley's Canyon and I-80 — a popular scenic loop drive from Salt Lake.
The canyon is a favourite cycling climb for the city's road riders, with a steady 6% gradient and a wide enough shoulder for safety. Several restaurants and small shops cluster around the mouth of the canyon, including Ruth's Diner — the oldest restaurant in continuous operation in Utah, occupying a converted streetcar built in 1930. The fall colours in late September and early October are spectacular.
