The towering granite "This Is the Place" Monument stands at the mouth of Emigration Canyon, on the eastern edge of the city, marking the spot where Brigham Young is said to have looked out over the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847 and pronounced the search for a new Zion over. The 60-foot central pylon is topped by a bronze statue of Young flanked by his two principal lieutenants.
The monument itself can be viewed from a free overlook just off Sunnyside Avenue — no ticket needed for the monument grounds. The associated Heritage Park, with its reconstructed pioneer village, is a separate paid attraction.
