The Deuel Log Home

The Deuel Log Home, built in 1847, is one of the oldest surviving structures from the original Mormon settlement of the Salt Lake Valley. It now stands near Temple Square, between the Museum of Church History and Art and the Family History Library, having been relocated from its original site to preserve it.

The simple one-room log construction illustrates the austere conditions facing the first pioneer settlers who arrived in the valley before any permanent buildings existed. It is a small but evocative reminder that the broad, tree-lined streets and granite temples of modern Salt Lake City were built on a very rough beginning.
