Conference Center

The LDS Church's Conference Center, opened in 2000, is the modern counterpart to the Tabernacle across the street. It is enormous — 1.5 million square feet, with a 21,000-seat main auditorium — and is the venue for the church's twice-yearly worldwide General Conference. Outside conference weekends it is open for guided tours.

The architecture is restrained but the interior numbers are impressive: a stage that fits 360 choir members, an organ with 7,667 pipes, and a rooftop garden of nearly four acres planted to represent Utah's mountain meadows. The rooftop is accessible only on the tour but worth the time — the views of the Salt Lake Temple and the Wasatch Range are the best from any public building downtown.

A story
The 21,000-seat auditorium is one of the largest theatre-style spaces in the world without a single internal column blocking sight lines. The pulpit is carved from a single black walnut tree that grew in the front yard of LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley's home.
