A modest but unexpectedly interesting numismatic museum on the ground floor of the Banco Central do Brasil. The collection covers the history of Brazilian money — colonial Portuguese coins, slave-trade tokens, Empire-era cruzeiros, the hyperinflation notes of the 1980s — alongside foreign coins and notes from around the world.
The unmissable exhibit is the 60-kg Canaã Nugget, found in 1983 in the Serra Pelada gold mine and the largest gold nugget on display anywhere in the world. Bring ID; free; closed Mondays.
