Lahore Railway Station

Lahore's main railway station is a fortress-like Victorian construction, completed in 1859 as one of the first major stations on the Indian subcontinent's railway network. After the 1857 uprising, the British insisted the station also be defensible: hence the turrets, slit windows, and crenellated walls that make it feel as much military redoubt as transport hub.

Even if you are not travelling, the station is worth a half-hour visit — the long brick concourse, the long-distance train departure boards in Urdu and English, the chai vendors and porters in red shirts. It is one of the most atmospheric working stations in South Asia.
