The daily flag-lowering ceremony at the Pakistan–India border, 25 km east of Lahore, is one of the strangest spectacles in South Asia. Just before sunset, soldiers in starched uniforms and absurd fan-shaped headdresses execute a synchronised piece of military choreography — high kicks, snarls, slow-motion turns — across the closed border. The crowds on each side respond with patriotic chants, and the gates open just long enough for the flags to be lowered simultaneously before being slammed shut for the night.
Buses run from Lahore in the late afternoon; aim to arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset to get a seat. Tourists are usually shown to the front row of the Pakistani stand. The ceremony lasts about 45 minutes. Free.
