Wazir Khan Mosque

Mughal mosque famed for its extraordinary tile-mosaic work

A 17th-century Mughal mosque in the Walled City, completed in 1634 and celebrated for having some of the finest tile-mosaic (kashi-kari) work in South Asia. The entrance, just inside the Delhi Gate of the old city, opens through a small bazaar; a small tip to the chowkidar will let you climb one of the minarets for a view over the Old City rooftops.

A story
The mosque was built by Hakim Ilm-ud-din Ansari, a physician from Chiniot who rose to become governor of Punjab under Shah Jahan and took the honorific Wazir Khan. The tile-makers were imported from Kashan in Persia; the calligraphy across the prayer hall facade is by Muhammad Ali, who reportedly worked on the project for seven years before declaring himself satisfied.
