Shahi Hammam

The Shahi Hammam is a Mughal Persian-style bathhouse built in 1635 by the same Wazir Khan who endowed the nearby mosque — for the use of travellers entering Lahore through the Delhi Gate. After centuries of use as a warehouse, a market, and a primary school, it was painstakingly restored between 2013 and 2015 and is now open to visitors.

The bathhouse has a tepidarium, caldarium, and frigidarium in the Roman style, all topped with shallow domes painted with fragments of original Mughal frescoes. The lighting was designed so that shafts of daylight strike each dome at different times of day — the kind of clever Mughal engineering that does not survive in many other Lahore monuments.
