The Summer Riding School, cut from the cliff face by Fischer von Erlach the elder in 1693, is the most atmospheric of the festival venues. Performances are held under the open sky in summer or under a retractable roof for opera in cool weather.
Even without a ticket, the facade and the adjoining Karl-Böhm-Saal can be seen on Festspielhaus tours. The acoustic — three tiers of stone galleries — is unique.
