Franciscan Church

The most interesting church in Salzburg architecturally: a squat dark Romanesque nave built around 1200 opens into a soaring Gothic choir added in the 15th century, with delicate fan vaulting that fountains down from a slender central pillar. The contrast is startling.

The 17th-century baroque high altar, by Fischer von Erlach, was rebuilt around a late-Gothic Madonna by Michael Pacher. Free entry. The Franciscans still hold daily mass.
