The narrow, partly arcaded medieval shopping street that runs the length of the old town is one of the great urban set pieces in central Europe. Every facade carries a wrought-iron guild sign — golden pretzels, dragons, hammers, scissors — and Mozart was born at number 9, halfway along.
The street is closed to traffic and is best walked early, before the cruise-group flag-bearers arrive, or after eight in the evening when the shops have shut and the lighting takes over. Most of the through-passages, called Durchhäuser, lead to hidden courtyards worth poking your head into.
