Mirabell Palace and Gardens

The pale yellow palace across the river houses the mayor's offices, but the Marble Hall is one of Europe's most beautiful concert venues — Mozart performed here as a child, and small chamber concerts are still held most evenings.

The formal gardens, laid out in 1690 by Fischer von Erlach, are open to the public and free. The Pegasus fountain, the steps with the dwarf statues, and the rose garden all featured in The Sound of Music's "Do-Re-Mi" sequence.

A story
Built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his mistress Salome Alt and their fifteen children, the palace was originally called Schloss Altenau. After Wolf Dietrich's spectacular downfall — he was imprisoned in Hohensalzburg by his own nephew — the new archbishop renamed it Mirabell and removed every reference to Salome from the masonry.
