The big house of the Salzburg Festival, the Großes Festspielhaus, is built directly into the side of the Mönchsberg — its 102-metre stage is one of the largest in the world. Clemens Holzmeister designed the building in 1960, replacing an older Festspielhaus from 1925.
You can only get inside on a guided tour (twice daily in season, once a day off-season) or with a ticket to a performance. Even from the outside, the modern facade fronting Hofstallgasse is striking.
