Reisszug

The Reisszug is the world's oldest operating funicular, hauling supplies up the back of the Festung Hohensalzburg from a yard near Nonnberg. It was first mentioned in 1515 — originally hand-powered, then water-driven, now electric — and is still used daily by the fortress.

The route is closed to the public but the lower station is easy to find at the foot of the fortress hill and the wooden cabin sometimes appears at the bottom. It is a quietly remarkable piece of working medieval engineering.
