Bergen Cathedral (Bergen domkirke) is the oldest and most important church in the city. The original structure dates to the 12th century; what you see today is largely a reconstruction after the great fire of 1702, completed in 1765, with further restoration work in the 19th century. The interior is plain and dignified — Norwegian Lutheran churches are not known for ornament — but the setting on a small rise above the city centre is attractive.
Behind the cathedral is the old churchyard where some notable Bergensians are buried. The site itself, next to the old Latin school (Bergen Cathedral School, founded in the 1150s and still operating), gives a sense of how long this corner of the city has been an educational and spiritual centre.
