Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen) is an open-air museum on the Sandviken peninsula, a short bus ride north of the city centre. Around 50 wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries were gathered here from various parts of Bergen and reassembled as a period neighbourhood — streets, alleyways, a baker's shop, a dentist's, a tailor's, private houses with their original furnishings.
Guided tours in English are offered regularly through the summer and are well worth joining; the guides go into the individual buildings and bring the period details to life. The museum is smaller than Oslo's Norsk Folkemuseum but quieter and easier to absorb. Take bus 3, 4, or 6 from the centre.
