St. Mary's Church

St. Mary's Church is Bergen's oldest surviving building, a Romanesque church begun in the 12th century and later enlarged with Gothic details. Its twin towers and heavy stone form make it a quiet counterpoint to the wooden waterfront at nearby Bryggen.

Inside, look for the carved pulpit, the altarpiece, and the traces of the German merchant community that worshipped here for centuries. It is one of the best places in Bergen to feel how old the harbour city really is.
