Witch Stone (Heksestein)

On the hill of Nordnes, a simple stone memorial marks the site associated with Bergen's witch trials — one of the darker chapters in the city's history. The Heksestein (Witch Stone) is modest and easy to walk past, but if you know the history it carries weight. Bergen and its surrounding region saw several hundred witch-trial executions between the 16th and 17th centuries.

The stone is in a pleasant part of Nordnes park, and the detour to see it fits naturally into a walk around the peninsula. The placard explains the history. It is the kind of quiet memorial that rewards the traveller who reads it.

A story
Between 1566 and 1700, around 350 people were executed for witchcraft in the Hordaland region around Bergen. The trials peaked in the early 17th century, when local authorities enthusiastically adopted the European witch-hunting manuals. The last execution in Bergen itself was in 1679.
