Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

The film academy's museum of moviemaking in the restored 1939 May Company building

Opened in 2021 in the restored Streamline Moderne May Company building — with a spherical Renzo Piano addition grafted onto the back — this is the museum the people behind the Oscars finally built. The galleries trace the craft and history of filmmaking through costumes, props, cameras, and clips, with standout dedicated spaces such as the Hayao Miyazaki retrospective and an immersive Oscars experience.

The rooftop terrace of the sphere gives a fine view across the Hollywood Hills, and the building itself is one of the better pieces of recent architecture on the Mile. Timed tickets are advisable on weekends.
