The Santa Monica Pier — built in 1906, with a Ferris wheel and an ancient carousel — is the city's most photogenic landmark and the western end of old Route 66. A few miles south, Venice Beach's boardwalk is one of the great free shows in America: bodybuilders, street performers, skateboarders, and tarot readers all competing for attention along the sand. A bike path connects the two; rentals are plentiful and the ride is flat and gorgeous.
