The Last Bookstore

A vast independent bookstore in a converted bank building in downtown LA, with two floors of new and used books, a vinyl section, and a maze of small genre rooms upstairs that draws visitors purely for the design. The shop has reframed downtown's image as a creative neighbourhood since opening at this location in 2011.

Open until late most evenings. Browsing is unhurried and the staff knowledgeable; queues at the till are normal at weekends.

A story
The shop occupies a former Spring Street bank — twenty-foot ceilings, marble columns, and original vault doors now wedged with paperbacks. The first-floor "book tunnel" and the curated upstairs arch of multicoloured spines are among the most photographed shop interiors on the West Coast.
