Bubbling asphalt pools in the middle of Miracle Mile — the La Brea Tar Pits are one of the world's great fossil sites, with Ice Age mammoths and saber-toothed cats still being excavated from the ground today. The adjacent Page Museum lets you watch paleontologists at work through a glass wall. Weird, absorbing, and genuinely free to walk around the park.
