Sacred Heart Cathedral (Jinan Catholic Cathedral)

Jinan's Catholic Cathedral on Shoulu Street is a Gothic Revival structure built by Italian missionaries in the early twentieth century, with the distinctive twin towers and pointed arches of the style rendered in local brick. The church is still in active use by Jinan's Catholic community and is open to visitors outside Mass times.

The cathedral is one of the more unexpected buildings in central Jinan — its scale and style are jarring against the Chinese urban context in an interesting way. The interior is plain but dignified, with good acoustics. The church is near the German quarter and can be included in a walk through the colonial-era district.
