Jinan's Confucius Temple is smaller and less visited than the one in Qufu, but its location in the old city district among spring-fed canals gives it a more intimate character. The complex dates substantially from the Ming Dynasty and includes the standard sequence of ceremonial gates, courtyards, and the main Dacheng Hall, along with a forest of stone steles recording local scholars and historical texts. A county school historically occupied the same compound.
The temple is worth a visit on its own merits and fits naturally into a walk through the old spring district, which contains several significant historic buildings within easy walking distance of each other. Entry is modest — around ¥10.
