Most of Jinan's Ming Dynasty city wall was demolished in the 1950s and 1960s as the city modernised, but a substantial section survives in the south of the old city, incorporated into a small park along what was the southern wall alignment. The surviving wall is built from large fired bricks and reaches its original height in places, giving a sense of the scale and solidity of the Ming fortification.
The wall section is most interesting for the view it provides of how the spring system worked within the city defenses: the wall was designed to channel spring water in channels along its base, using the natural hydrology of the limestone aquifer as part of the city's water management. Walking the wall park on a quiet morning with the spring water audible below is one of Jinan's more meditative experiences.
