Quancheng Square

Quancheng Square — Spring City Square — is Jinan's main civic space, a large plaza in the commercial heart of the city where people gather in the evenings for the kind of public life that Chinese cities do well: kite-flying, tai chi, street food vendors on the periphery, and crowds of ordinary urban residents using public space as it is meant to be used. The square's name references Jinan's spring heritage, and a decorative fountain occupies its center.

The square is not a tourist sight in itself, but it is the natural hub of the city's commercial district and a useful orientation point. The streets fanning out from it — particularly Quancheng Road to the south and Jingsi Road to the east — have the concentration of shops, restaurants, and people-watching that makes walking in Chinese cities enjoyable. The evening scene is particularly lively; this is when Jinan's residents come out in force.
