Qianfo Mountain

Qianfo Mountain rises at the southern edge of Jinan's city center, its north-facing cliffs and terraced slopes lined with Buddhist temples, carved niches, and hundreds of stone-cut figures accumulated over fourteen centuries. The Xingguochan Temple near the summit is the main complex, with Tang-era carvings in the rock face around it. From the summit there are broad views north over Jinan and, on a clear day, across the Yellow River plain.

The mountain is a manageable climb of about 40 minutes by foot, with stone paths and stairs throughout, or a cable car from the east side. The grounds include several smaller halls, pavilions, and formal gardens. Entry is ¥30. The Daming Lake and Baotu Spring are both visible from the summit, completing the three-tier geography that defines Jinan: mountain to the south, springs in the middle, lake to the north.

A story
The name means "Thousand Buddha Mountain" — the cliffs here have been carved with Buddhist figures since the Sui Dynasty (581–618 CE), when the first major rock-cut temples were created. The practice continued under the Tang, producing hundreds of figures ranging from small votive niches to large seated Buddhas. Some of the most important carvings date from the same period as the Longmen Grottoes at Luoyang, though Qianfo receives a fraction of the visitors.
