Former Jinan Synagogue

Jinan had a small Jewish community in the early twentieth century — traders, professionals, and a handful of families connected to the foreign commercial settlement — who built a synagogue in the German quarter near the old station. The building survives, repurposed but intact, and is one of the more unexpected survivals in the colonial quarter. A small plaque records its history.

The building is a minor sight but fits naturally into a walk through the German quarter district; the contrast between its modest scale and the ambition of Jinan's other historic buildings says something about the limited scale of foreign settlement in this inland treaty port compared to the coastal cities. Worth noting as you walk past.
