Liberation Pavilion

The Liberation Pavilion on the old city moat commemorates the PLA's capture of Jinan in September 1948, during the Chinese Civil War. The pavilion stands on the site where Communist forces broke through the city's defenses after eight days of fighting, and the memorial marks a moment that many historians regard as decisive in the broader civil war — the point at which the Nationalist position in north China became untenable.

The pavilion is small and the memorial is modest, but the site has historical significance and the surrounding moat area is pleasant to walk. For those interested in modern Chinese military history, this is a meaningful stop; for others, the moat walk past it connects the spring district to Daming Lake and is worth doing regardless.

A story
The Battle of Jinan in September 1948 was one of the first major urban battles of the Chinese Civil War in which the Communists captured a strongly defended Nationalist city. The assault took eight days; 24,000 Nationalist soldiers were killed and 61,000 captured. The battle demonstrated that the PLA could take walled cities, and its rapid success accelerated the Nationalist collapse. Liberation Pavilion stands on the site of the old city wall section that was breached in the final assault.
