Gedung Sate

Colonial-era government building topped with a satay-shaped spire

Bandung's most recognisable building, designed by Dutch architect J. Gerber and completed in 1920. The name means "satay building" — the decorative skewer of golden orbs on the central tower does look remarkably like a stick of satay. Built in a style that blends Dutch colonial with Javanese and Mughal elements, it now houses the West Java provincial government and is not always open to visitors, but the exterior and grounds are worth a look. The building anchors a civic precinct of similarly impressive 1920s architecture.

A story
On 3 December 1945, seven young Indonesian engineers defending the building from Dutch troops were killed here. The date is commemorated annually, and the seven are honoured with a monument on the grounds.
