Villa Isola

Streamline Moderne villa from 1933, now part of UPI campus

Possibly the most beautiful Art Deco building in Indonesia, Villa Isola sits on the slopes north of central Bandung, designed in 1933 by Charles Wolff Schoemaker for the press baron Dominique Berretty. The white concrete curves rise in a series of tiered ovals, framed by a long axial garden and reflecting pool that catches a view of Tangkuban Perahu volcano on clear days. Streamline Moderne done with serious Italian futurist flourishes.

The building is now part of the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and serves as administrative offices. The interior is normally closed to casual visitors, but the gardens and exterior are open and well worth the trip north — the grounds are sometimes used for weddings. Combine with a visit to the Dago neighbourhood on the way back.

A story
Villa Isola was built in 1933 by Italian-Dutch tycoon Dominique Berretty as a private residence. Berretty died the following year in the crash of the KLM Uiver airliner, never having enjoyed his masterpiece. The villa became a hotel, then a school, and now sits on the campus of the Indonesian University of Education.
