Grand Mosque of Bandung

Twin-minareted mosque at the heart of Alun-Alun, with city views from the top

The Grand Mosque (Masjid Raya Bandung) fronts the open square of Alun-Alun, the traditional heart of the city. The minarets are the most prominent landmarks in central Bandung, and the elevators inside are open to non-Muslim visitors during daylight hours — the upper platforms give a 360-degree view over the city basin, with the volcanoes ringing the horizon.

The square outside is a social space all day long: families come to sit on the artificial grass, kids fly kites, vendors sell satay and bandrek (ginger drink) from carts. On Friday afternoons it fills with worshippers in white. Dress modestly to enter the mosque or climb the minarets — coverings are available to borrow at the entrance.

A story
The mosque has been rebuilt and expanded more than a dozen times since it was first built of bamboo and thatch in 1810. The current two-tone minarets, 81 metres tall, date from a 2003 renovation and have an open-air observation deck visitors can climb for the best free view of central Bandung.
