Hotel Savoy Homann

1939 Streamline Moderne hotel that hosted Sukarno and the Bandung Conference delegates

The Savoy Homann on Asia-Afrika Street is the grand dame of Bandung's Art Deco hotels, an unmissable Streamline Moderne building completed in 1939 to a design by A.F. Aalbers. The curved white facade, ribbon windows and rounded balconies are pure interwar maritime moderne, and the hotel has been carefully maintained — the lobby, the bar and the courtyard pool all retain their original character.

You do not have to stay to see the place. Walk in for an afternoon coffee on the courtyard terrace and look around. A small museum corner near the lobby has photos and memorabilia from the Asian-African Conference. Across the street, the Gedung Merdeka (the conference building itself) is part of the same historical ensemble.

A story
Charlie Chaplin stayed here in 1932 while filming travel footage for his film City Lights, and the Bandung Conference delegations of 1955 — including Nehru, Zhou Enlai and Nasser — all used the Savoy Homann as their main hotel. The Mercedes that drove them down Asia-Afrika Street is still parked in the lobby.
