Indonesia's MIT — the country's most prestigious science and engineering university. The campus is also one of the architectural gems of Bandung, designed largely by the Dutch architect Henri Maclaine Pont in the early 1920s. Pont fused the rational Dutch School tradition with elements of Sundanese vernacular architecture: steep tiled roofs, exposed timber trusses, and broad verandahs against the equatorial sun. The Aula Barat and Aula Timur halls are particularly striking.
The leafy grounds are open to visitors during the day and make for a pleasant stroll. The Centre for Research on Indonesian Architecture in the West Hall hosts occasional exhibits. The bookshops, cafes and student warungs of Jalan Ganesha just outside the gates are some of the cheapest and liveliest places to eat in the city.
