Baojue Temple

Baojue Temple is a postwar Buddhist temple in the north of the central city, best known for the enormous gilded Maitreya Buddha that sits on the main roof. The temple itself is unremarkable; the Buddha is the photograph.

The interior holds a hall dedicated to the bones of soldiers who died in the Chinese Civil War, and several minor shrines. The temple is free to enter, with the usual incense and prayer materials available. Open from early morning to early evening.

A story
The temple's central image is the laughing Maitreya Buddha — a thirty-metre-tall gilded statue of Mile Fo, the future Buddha, set on top of the main hall and visible from the surrounding streets. The temple's annual Lantern Festival, held over the Chinese New Year, draws crowds for its themed lanterns lit at night around the giant Buddha.
