Miyahara

Miyahara is a converted Japanese-era ophthalmology clinic on the edge of the old city, now used as the flagship store of the Dawncake company. The brick exterior is colonial, the interior an extravagant fantasy of dark wood, brass, and floor-to-ceiling shelves stocked with branded pineapple cakes, chocolates, and Taiwanese teas.

The ground-floor ice cream counter is the standard stop — choose a flavour and a cone, then add up to three toppings and a sauce. Expect a queue, but the line moves quickly. Around fifteen minutes' walk from Taichung Station.

A story
The building was once the eye clinic of Dr Miyahara Takeo, a Japanese ophthalmologist who set up practice here during the colonial period. It was abandoned for decades after the war; in 2010 the Taiwanese confectioner Dawncake restored it as a flagship sweet shop and the interior was designed as a Harry-Potter-style three-storey library of chocolates and ice cream.
