Tunghai is the oldest Christian-founded university in Taiwan, opened in 1955 by American Methodists. The campus, designed by I. M. Pei and his early collaborators in a low-rise red-brick style, spreads across a wooded ridge in the western suburbs. The signature buildings are the Luce Memorial Chapel and the original library, both small but architecturally remarkable.
The campus is open to the public and worth at least an hour. The university dairy at the western end sells fresh milk, milk ice cream, and yoghurt that are a city standard. Combine with the nearby Donghai Night Market and a walk in the Donghai Forest.
