Jan Hus Memorial

Monument to the Czech reformer burned for heresy in 1415

The Jan Hus Memorial stands in the centre of Old Town Square, unveiled on the 500th anniversary of the reformer's execution in 1915. Ladislav Šaloun's sculpture shows Hus surrounded by Hussite warriors and Protestant exiles, the inscription reading: "Truth prevails."

Hus was a Czech priest and philosopher who challenged Church corruption a century before Luther — his trial and burning at Constance in 1415 made him a Czech national martyr. The memorial is one of Prague's most politically charged monuments, and its location at the heart of Old Town Square keeps his memory unavoidable for visitors.

A story
Hus was burned at the Council of Constance on 6 July 1415 — a date still commemorated as a Czech public holiday. His death triggered the Hussite Wars, in which Czech armies repeatedly defeated crusading forces sent by the Pope and Holy Roman Emperor. The monument was unveiled on 6 July 1915, five hundred years after his execution.
