Old Town Hall

Gothic town hall with the medieval Astronomical Clock tower

Address Staroměstské náměstí 1, Prague 1

The Old Town Hall is not a single building but a chain of medieval structures that accumulated along the square's western side over several centuries. The Gothic tower — with the Astronomical Clock embedded in its south wall — is the centrepiece, and the view from the top looks directly down onto the square's rooftop tangle of Gothic spires and baroque cupolas.

The tower's observation platform is one of the best vantage points in Prague, less crowded and far cheaper than many alternatives. Inside, the hall's council chamber and assembly rooms retain fine vaulted ceilings. The wing that was blown up by the retreating SS in May 1945 was never rebuilt — the empty space on the north side of the hall is an intentional reminder of the war's final days.

A story
When the clock was completed in 1410, the city council is said to have blinded the master clockmaker Hanuš so he could never build another one elsewhere. Hanuš reportedly crawled up and jammed the mechanism in revenge — stopping the clock for over a century.
