The Vyšehrad fortress on its rocky bluff south of the Old Town is quieter and less visited than Prague Castle but arguably more atmospheric. The park on the plateau contains the 11th-century Rotunda of St Martin, the neo-Gothic Basilica of St Peter and Paul, and the Vyšehrad Cemetery, where Dvořák, Smetana, Mucha, and other Czech luminaries are buried under elaborate tombs.
The walls offer long views over the Vltava valley in both directions. Below the cliffs, the riverside promenade links back to the city centre. Allow two to three hours to do the site justice; bring a picnic for the park.
