Katajanokka

Art-nouveau apartment island east of the centre, dominated by Uspenski Cathedral

The narrow island east of the central harbour, joined to the mainland by a short bridge near Kauppatori. Uspenski Cathedral sits on the high ground at the western tip; the rest is a grid of imposing art-nouveau apartment buildings from the early 1900s, with rounded turrets, granite portals, and ornamental ironwork. The shoreline path circles the entire island and is one of the better short city walks.

The eastern tip holds the cruise ship terminal — when a big ship is in, the small streets fill with passengers — and the surviving warehouses now house cafés, ice cream parlours, and the Hotel Katajanokka in a former prison. Tram 4 or 5 from the centre.
